Speaker Biographies Rob Hayes, ’95, First Round Capital Rob joined First Round Capital in 2006 from Omidyar Network where he was their first venture investor. He led most of Omidyar Network's initial venture capital deals and later built and ran the technology investing group. Prior to joining Omidyar Network in 2004, Rob was at Palm where he started up their corporate venture fund. While in that role he also managed the strategy effort around Palm OS that led to the spinout of PalmSource. Rob started at Palm as product manager for the initial device-independent releases of Palm OS. During this time, Rob was responsible for the versions of Palm OS on dozens of devices including the initial Treo products. Rob previously spearheaded complex, system-level product development efforts at companies such as Geoworks and Go Corp where he focused on building products for the Japanese market. He began his career with the Japan External Trade Organization, studying international trade issues and building relationships between US and Japanese businesses, at a time when trade friction between the two countries was at its peak. Dr. Kedrosky is an investor, writer, and entrepreneur. He is a sought-after speaker; an analyst for CNBC television; a columnist for TheStreet/RealMoney; and the editor of Infectious Greed, one of the best known business blogs. He is frequently quoted in major publications around the world.
Dr. Kedrosky is currently a Senior Fellow at the Kauffman Foundation, where he is focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and the future of risk capital. He is also Senior Research Advisor to Ten Asset Management, a southern California institutional money management firm using innovative quantitative techniques in capital markets. He is also a fellow and on the advisory board of the Berkeley Center for Innovative Financial Technology. He is an advisor to various other companies, institutional investors, and venture capital firms.
Dr. Kedrosky has also a professional seed investor, having run an innovative seed capital program based out of the highly-ranked University of California, San Diego. He has also been a venture partner at Ventures West, a large institutional venture capital firm.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Kedrosky founded the technology equity research practice at HSBC James Capel. As a highly-ranked technology equity analyst, transactions with which he was involved created in excess of a billion dollars in public market value. Dr. Kedrosky was one of the first analysts to cover Internet companies, as well as making early and timely calls in networking and communications.
Dr. Kedrosky has written influential columns and articles for the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Harvard Business Review, and others. He has also appeared on many media outlets, including CNN, PBS Newshour, ABC Nightline, and the New York Times, and he can be seen frequently on CNBC.
Dr. Kedrosky financed and launched GrokSoup, widely recognized as one of the first hosted blogging services. Under his management, the company grew to be among the largest such services in the market.
He has a Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario, an M.B.A. from Queen's University, and a B. Engineering from Carleton University.

Hans founded Industry Ventures in 2000 and focuses on secondary direct investment opportunities and limited partnership interests. Hans has sourced and led the acquisition of over $500 million of secondary venture investments. These transactions include purchasing corporate venture capital funds, restructuring partnership interests for venture capital funds, acquiring portfolios of Limited Partnership interests, purchasing founder's equity interests and structuring special situation investments with General Partners and Limited Partners. The firm manages investments in over eighty venture capital partnerships and seventy five private companies. Prior to Industry Ventures, Hans was a successful entrepreneur who co-founded and acted as President of Microline Software which was acquired by Blaze Software (which completed a successful initial public offering and was acquired by Fair Isaac - NYSE: FIC). The Private Equity Program was launched in 2007 under the direction of Associate Professor Laura B. Resnikoff ’76, a member of the Columbia Business School faculty since 1991. Professor Resnikoff has taught a series of electives, including Turnaround Management and the Master Class in Restructuring, one of the School’s inaugural Master Class offerings. In spring 2008, she offered the inaugural Master Class in Private Equity.
Professor Resnikoff joined the faculty after a robust career with both large-scale corporations and private equity entities. She has extensive global experience with private equity transactions, fund-raising and debt placements. During her Columbia Business School tenure, she has consulted with corporations in a variety of industries — as well as selected not-for-profit organizations — on all aspects of organizational, operational and financial restructurings.
