Panelist Bios Mr. Hugh Martin Mr. Martin joined Pacific Biosciences in 2004 as a seasoned executive with a 25-year track record managing leading edge technologies, new ventures, and high growth businesses. Previously, Mr. Martin was Chairman, President and CEO of ONI Systems—a high-speed optical telecommunications company he founded in 1998 and took public in 2000. Named the Fastest Growing Company in Silicon Valley in 2001, ONI was sold to Ciena in 2002. After its sale, Mr. Martin served as a consultant to Ciena, a CEO in residence at the venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and was a Director at Cloudshield Technologies. Prior to ONI, Mr. Martin was President and Director of 3DO—an interactive gaming company. His earlier experience includes running desktop engineering for Apple Computer and founding Ridge Computers—designer of the world's first commercial reduced instruction set computing (RISC) minicomputer. Mr. Martin received a BS in Electrical Engineering at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Mr. Martin currently serves on the Board of Directors of Pacific Biosciences.
Mr. Andrew Thompson Mr. Thompson is a co-founder of Proteus. He is also a Managing Member of Spring Ridge Ventures, and has led the incubation of Proteus since inception. From 1994-1999, Mr. Thompson co-founded and served as a director and chief executive officer of FemRx until the company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson. Previously, Mr. Thompson co-founded and was chief financial officer for CardioRhythm through its acquisition by Medtronic. He holds an M.A. in engineering from Cambridge University, where he was a United Kingdom National Engineering Scholar, an M.A. in education from Stanford University and a M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Mr. Frank Fischer Frank Fischer has more than 25 years of senior management experience in the medical device industry. He has served on the NeuroPace Board of Directors since 1998 and joined the Company as its Chief Executive Officer in January 2000. Prior to joining NeuroPace, Mr. Fischer was President and Chief Executive Officer of Heartport, Inc., a cardiac surgery company, and served on Heartport's Board of Directors. Mr. Fischer was President and Chief Executive Officer and a director of Ventritex, Inc., a company that pioneered implantable cardiac defibrillators. Before joining Ventritex, he spent ten years in various management positions at Cordis Corporation in the cardiac and neurosurgical device areas, serving most recently as President of the Implantable Products Division. Prior to that, he spent seven years with General Electric Company in a variety of operating positions. Mr. Fischer holds an M.S. in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Currently, he serves on the boards of several privately held medical device companies.
Ms. Wende Hutton Seasoned healthcare investor Wende Hutton is passionate about identifying, investing in and building companies that are revolutionizing the practice of medicine. She joined Canaan in 2004, bringing diverse expertise from across the entire medical spectrum. Over the last 15 years, Wende has facilitated the market entrance of over 11 novel and lifesaving medical devices, new drugs and diagnostics. Wende began her venture career at Mayfield Fund in 1993, where she was a General Partner in the life sciences group until 2001. Most recently, she was a General Partner at Spring Ridge Ventures, a healthcare-focused seed fund. Earlier in her career, Wende held senior operational management positions at GenPharm International and Nellcor in business development and marketing. Wende holds an AB in human biology from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
