Teten reveals the secrets of originating proprietary deals
May 8, 2008 - David Teten makes clear the key elements of finding proprietary deals and how investors can use the latest Web 2.0 technologies to their advantage.
David Teten reduced the complexities of finding investment opportunities that have little or no bidding war competition in his hour long presentation - Where are the deals? He started by describing the common and arduous methods of traditional deal origination and explained how both private equity investors and venture capital investors must compete for the best deals, causing them to suffer the winner's curse where the bidding war has resulted in a lower return than they would have enjoyed had there been less competition. After a quick explanation of how Web 2.0 technologies work, Teten then discussed the earmarks of a potential investment to lay the groundwork for how one could use networking and social network technologies to gain advantage in sourcing deals. He ended with concrete recommendations for things members of the audience could do to immediately start improving their access to deals. The audience was engaged, and even though Teten was hoarse from having given numerous talks during his whirlwind tour of the Bay Area, the question and answer session was lively and animated. Special thanks to Anton Papp '00 of Pagemill Partners for hosting the event. Colin Johnson
